Special Interests and Services The two neonatal units in Leeds are both regional neonatal intensive care units that offer full neonatal intensive care to newborn infants born in Leeds and to infants transferred to our units from around the Yorkshire region. The units are staffed by a dedicated team of highly trained neonatal nurses and our consultants are all specialist in neonatal medicine. We can provide the full range of intensive care support and all forms of ventilation including HFOV (high frequency oscillatory ventilation) and nitric oxide therapy. The regional unit at Leeds General Infirmary also specialises in care of newborn infants requiring surgery, and we work closely with a team of specialist paediatric surgeons. The regional unit at St James's specialises in care of infants with complex kidney and liver disorders, in conjunction with specialist paediatricans. Both units work closely with our obstetric colleagues including specialists in foetal and maternal medicine. There are two transitional care units in Leeds which allow us to support infants alongside their mothers when they require extra nursing care, but without needing admission to the neonatal unit itself. We have a dedicated team of family care sisters who provide care for preterm infants who have been discharged into the community. In both centres there is a follow up programme for high risk infants, and we work closely with other professionals such as physiotherapists, speech therapists, dieticians and community paediatricians. Both units are actively involved in research so that we can continue to develop the best care for these extremely vulnerable infants. Research interests include brain imaging, nutrition (including artificial feeding), ethics, logical systems, therapeutic hypothermia and many more. From time to time we participate in national and international multi-centre research studies. No infant is entered into any research study without the prior consent of their parents, and if there is research being undertaken that affects your infant this will be discussed with you in full.
Fundraising and Charitable Donations The generosity of previous donations has allowed us to purchase equipment and provide facilities to the babies and their parents far beyond what we could otherwise offer. Both units within Leeds have a charitable trust fund and we are constantly looking to new ways to raise much needed funds. If you would like to fundraise or make a donation please contact the neonatal units directly at the addresses above. The following leaflets explain in more detail how donations are used and how we can support fundraising.
