The Neonatal Network welcomes its new Lead Clinician - Chris Day

Chris Day has been appointed to the role of Lead Clinician for the Network, commencing on the 3rd October 2008.  Chris currently works as a Consultant Neonatologist at Bradford Royal Infirmary.  He has a wealth of experience in neonatology and is clinically highly respected.

Chris has been involved with the Network previously through his membership of the Specialist Obstetrics and Paediatrics Steering Group (SOAPS) and has excellent leadership and managerial skills, having worked as the clinical lead at Bradford Royal Infirmary for some years.

Chris will work for the YNN one day per week to provide the clinical expertise and help set the priorities for the YNN.  He will take the lead on supporting the development of a robust information management system within the Network to provide "real time" data and enable a detailed understanding of patient flows and capacity to be assessed.

Changes to the Neonatal Service at Calderdale and Huddersfield

I am pleased to inform you that neonatal services in the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust have now merged together to form one neonatal unit based at the Calderdale Royal Hospital. There are no longer any neonatal services at the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

Our newly extended and refurbished neonatal unit comprises of 6 NICU/HDU cots and 20 Special Care Cots.

I would like to thank you all those who supported us during reconfiguration of our services, especially the Yorkshire Neonatal Transport Team for helping us out with our transfers and Denise Evans who came to help us on the various moving days. Also, thank you to those units who had to look after our babies a bit longer than usual. It was much appreciated.

Network Manager

A word from MICHELLE MILNER

Dear All

As you are aware, the Yorkshire Neonatal Network has had a vacancy for a Network Manager for over 18 months.  Lisa Marriott covered this post during 2007 in her role as Specialist Obstetrics and Paediatric Services (SOAPS) Commissioning Manager.  Lisa left her post in January to join the Specialist Commissioning Group and I was asked to cover all the children's and obstetric networks set up under SOAPS, pending a review of all networks in the region.  As an experienced paediatric nurse I have taken this opportunity to broaden my experience of network management and have started to gain a greater understanding of the complexity of each network.  Within the Yorkshire Neonatal Network, as I am obviously not an expert neonatal nurse, we have recruited Denise Evans to act up as Lead Nurse for the Network during this transition period.

The Yorkshire Neonatal Network has a number of high priorities for 2008/9.  We have been working towards the classification and designation of all units in line with BAPM 2001 standards.  Bryan and I have recently completed visits to each Trust to assess the current neonatal configuration, future services and Network priorities.  Many thanks to everyone who spent time meeting with us.

The work programme and developments for the next 12 months follow on from these meetings.  We are now looking to undertake a comprehensive capacity and demand analysis to determine the numbers of beds at each level of care and have asked Denise to lead on a workforce analysis which will help inform us on the future workforce requirements.  We are also hoping to examine a data management system which will help us to collect and assess information on numbers of babies requiring neonatal services in the future.  All this, together with the transport project, gives us a very busy work programme for the year ahead.

If you have any queries please email me.

Regards

Michelle
